Golden Globes 2019 full winners list: Richard Madden and Olivia Colman triumph
British stars triumphed across the pond, with Richard Madden and Olivia Colman picking up gongs at the 76th annual Golden Globes.
The pair were among a slew of stars honoured at Sunday night’s ceremony with Madden scooping Best Actor in a TV series for his role as troubled PC David Budd in explosive BBC drama, Bodyguard, while Colman picked up Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her royal role in The Favourite.
Ben Whishaw Took home Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Very English Scandal, while Christian Bale thanked “Satan” as he was with his second Golden Globe. The British talent won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his portrayal of the late Dick Cheney in political satire, Vice.
Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody fought off competition from A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and If Beale Street Could Talk to win the coveted Best Motion Picture – Drama after becoming the highest grossing music biopic of all time.
Lead star Rami Malek also picked up Best Actor for his turn as the legendary Freddie Mercury, leaving Bradley Cooper, Willem Defoe, Lucas Hedges, and John David Washington empty handed.
The female equivalent went to Hollywood icon Glenn Close who looked shocked to hear her name called out for her role in The Wife. She received a standing ovation for her emotional acceptance speech which saw her pay tribute to her “category sister” Lady Gaga.
“We have gotten to know each other a little bit so far, and I can’t wait to spend more time with you,” the tearful star said. “I’m so — everything that you did this year, or what you are here for — we all should be up here together, that’s all I can say. Oh, my god, I just don’t believe it.”
A Star is Born was largely snubbed with Cooper and Gaga missing out on the Best Actor and Actress gongs and Cooper failing to pick up Best Director which went to Alfonso Cuarón for Roma. The romantic tragedy did pick up Best Original Song for Gaga’s track Shallow.
Peter Farrelly’s controversial Green Book won Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy with Mahershala Ali winning a Golden Globe for his role as the real-life musician Don Shirley, whose family have argued has not been accurately portrayed.
